A tribute to Gordon Walters
Wahine Ma has been hugely influenced by the work of NZ artist Gordon Walters and his famous koru series. His contemporary koru patterns were symbolic of Maori rock art which he held particular interest in for over 30 years. For Maori, the koru pattern holds great significance as it symbolises new life and new beginnings. It is based on the new unfurling fern frond.
The top hat adorned with feathers is reminiscent of mid-18th century Aotearoa. It is associated with colonisation and is a representation of the massive cultural changes that occurred to all Maori people at that time.
