Artist Profile: Allen Harnett

Allen Harnett

Allen was born in Tauranga, New Zealand and grew up on a farm near Te Puke, Bay of Plenty.

Allen is of Ngai Tahu iwi and specialises in stone carving. Although he has been carving for 20 years he has only recently become a professional sculptor. Allen’s tutors include Clem Mellish of Havelock, Norm Clarke of Renwick, Brian Flintoff of Mapua and mentor Don Whiteman.

He prefers to work with Whalebone, Oamaru stone, Hinuera stone and Andesite. Allen’s inspiration comes from his culture, nature and simple forms. He is intrigued by the textures and patterns depicted in nature.

“I love nature, my culture and simple forms. I know the Native birds such as the fantail, weka and titi (muttonbird) well and have a special relationship with ruru (owl). I am learning about my culture through my carving and see this as a way of giving something back to Io (God)”.

Allen also enjoys sculpting larger works using limestone and Andesite and working with like-minded people. His dream for the future is to be invited to sculpt in other countries.
