Artist Profile: Clarence Collier

Ngati Porou, Mahaki (East Coast)

Stone sculptor/painter
Clarence Collier is a self taught artist working primarily in Oamaru Stone. He grew up in Greymouth on the West Coast of the South Island. It is there where much of his inspiration has come from, the beauty of the region and his respect for the environment.

Clarence enjoys the challenge of three dimensional work. He believes each stone has a korero which he interprets then transforms into an art piece. When creating each sculpture he works continuously without stopping to keep the mauri (lifeforce) flowing.

“Ki te Maori he mauri kai roto I nga mea katoa – I nga tangata, I nga whare, I nga rakau, I nga taonga whakairo”.

Clarence now lives and works in Wellington as a full-time artist.
