Artist Profile: Hepi Maxwell

Te Arawa, Ngati Rangiwewehi

Carver

Hepi is of Maori descent and has spent most of his life in close proximity to the Maori lifestyle and art forms. His carvings, though not of a traditional nature, are based on the gentle sweeping curves of ancient Maori art. This puts him in the very satisfying position of being able to produce work pleasing to the eye of both those who prefer traditional designs and those who appreciate.

Hepi particularly enjoys working on commissioned pieces as it involves people visiting his workshop in search of something extra special. He gets to know these people personally and has gained many good friends as a result.

“It is very satisfying to talk with someone, then design, carve and eventually present them with a carving that is just right. I have come to love working with jade, because I am able to care for ones I love, while at the same time produce work that gives me great satisfaction and brings joy to the hearts of others.”
