Artist Profile: James Pickernell
In 1996 James graduated with a degree in Fine Arts, majoring in Sculpture, from Taupo Quay School of Fine Arts in Wanganui.
My approach to functional objects is of desire to bestow upon the work, layers of meaning, not usually found in furniture. In other words although good design and ergonomics are important they are not the governing forces behind my work.
My furniture reflects our culture, history, the landscape and nature that surround’s us. It is intended to ask questions or push buttons. I take great pride in the quality of my workmanship and all my pieces are aimed at being thought provoking, but also highly functional.
The fire in my belly comes from my love for creation. My life’s work is to make objects that engage the human spirit and celebrate life and the wonder of being alive!
I make a stand for art furniture being alive and well in New Zealand.
