Artist Profile: Owen Mapp

Bone Carver

One of New Zealand’s premier carvers, Owen exhibits regularly in Japan, Europe, and at home here in New Zealand. Since 1989 Owen has been tutoring; his subjects spanning from bone and stone carving, sculpture, mixed media body adornment, casting, knife making, netsuke and design. Owen cites his experiences travelling on foot across five continents as the strength behind his leadership in the artistic growth of his students.

“I am attracted by ancient artefacts and attempt to translate their influences into contemporary concepts of lasting quality, by creating a timeless object to be enjoyed now or in a thousand years. My personal philosophy is that to be an artist I not only create but also teach my skills and pass on knowledge in my field. I research and share with others a lifestyle that I value highly. I clearly see myself as a link between past, present and future artists in my field.”
