Artist Profile: Rozi Demant
Rozi spent 15 years as apart of the fashion industry, in which time she designed her own label alongside her husband Michael. Tired of the fashion industry and retail, she closed her last store in 1998 and since then has been exploring various art forms and mediums. Her medium of choice is Hinuera stone, which is easily carved but hardens with age. Although Rozi attended art school, she considers herself self-taught.
The figurative sculptures are not preconceived, but develop out of the shape and texture of the piece of stone. They are carved deeply giving a play of light and shade, emphasising the stylised, sometimes primitive features and postures of the figures. Aesthetically pleasing in either a garden setting or indoors.
