Artist Profile: Tania Tupu

Ngati Porou
Jewellery Designer

“My mother is Miriama Brunton (Ngata) from TikiTiki and my father is Michael Brunton from the Waiarapa. I grew up in Porirua and left New Zealand at an early age to play basketball overseas. I represented the NZ Women’s team from 1992-2004 and played at the Sydney and Athens Olympic games. After retiring from basketball I pursued a career in jewellery manufacture and design. During this time I was privileged to come across a korowai weaving course run at Te Puna o Te Ora by Rauawaawa Charitable Trust in Waikato where I learnt korowai techniques. I opened my first retail store in Raglan in 2004 and this is where I started to sell my jewellery designs. In 2007 I opened a second store ‘Coastal Merchant’ located in Nelson then at the beginning of 2014 we sold our Nelson Store and moved back home to Wellington.
Now based in Wellington we wholesale my jewellery range to outlets throughout Aotearoa and the Pacific. Alongside my husband and business partner Chris Tupu we have two sons Kalani and Koa. “
