Hou moana whenua (New sea land) - Carved Landscape #4
totara
210 x 350 x 165mm
NZD $576.00

This piece of wood is combed off the beach at Waikanae, Te Tairawhiti (The East Coast). It has been washed out of the steep, stripped hills of the farming hinterland of the East Coast.

The clear felling of the forest for unimpeded farmland, which is kept clear by fences and pastured cows and sheep, reveals dramatic bones.
A landscape completely carved by the generations of farmers who have maintained the legacy of pastoral farming – a legacy that has disastrous environmental consequences. The erosion leading to silting up of rivers, inundation of coastal eco-systems and of course the haunting deathly absence of biodiversity through monoculturalism.

This piece of totara is a tiny fragment of a large post gouged by slipping out of the land, swept down out of the hills and carried along the bay.
