Clive has strong affiliations to Tainui and trained under  Master Carver Hone Taiapa. He was appointed as Senior Carver with the New Zealand Arts and Crafts Institute in 1981, then appointed Master Carver in 1983. Clive is of the ‘old school’ carvers, adhering strictly to traditional lines of design.

The Range of Wines

Sauvignon Blanc - 2008          NZD $19.90       
Bright in appearance, this wine has pungent notes of passionfruit, goosberries and fresh herbs. The intense and full flavoured palate is bursting with tropical flavours of melons and pineapple with a dash of herbaceous fresh cut grass and bell peppers. Length and persistence is given by a mineral backbone and balanced acidity.

Pinot Gris - 2008          NZD $19.90       
This wine is a delicate pale straw colour. Lifted aromatics are of nashi pears and fresh apple pie with a delicate hint of cloves and exotic spice. The palate is elegant with apparent pears, spice and some tropical notes with a refreshing citrus acidity carrying a long off-dry finish.

Pinot Noir - 2007          NZD $28.90
Bright, deep ruby and cherry appearance. Aromas of savoury ripe plum, cherry, smoky oak and dark spices.

Merlot - 2008          NZD $19.90       
A youthful and bright garnet red our Merlot has a pretty nose of black and red berries, some sweet spice notes and a touch of cedar and leather from French oak.  The palate shows more raspberry and dark cherry flavours within a framework of moderate tannins and balanced sweet fruit.  Fruit forward and soft on the palate this wine will be in its prime in its youth, 2 - 3 years from bottling.

In 1998 Andrea began a diploma in Applied Arts at Northland Polytechnic, specializing in Jewellery and Ceramics. In association with Northland Polytechnic she participated in an exhibition exchange with Northern Territories University, in Darwin, Australia, curating the exhibition with one other representative from her class. While in Darwin, Andrea got her first look at a print workshop and the types of work the students were producing. This triggered a new interest and when she returned to New Zealand, Andrea applied for the Bachelor of Fine Arts program offered at Otago Polytechnic. In 1999 Andrea moved to Dunedin where she majored in Printmaking, under the tutelage of Marilynn Webb and Chris De Jong, Graduating in 2002. Now Andrea’s art has been exhibited all over the country, from Te Miringa Gallery in Russell, Bay of Islands, to City Gallery in Invercargill.

My woodblocks are a tonal exploration of the New Zealand flax plant and the weaving unique to this material. I weave my images out of layers of ink. Reduction blocks mean each image is finite, being destroyed as part of the process (Atropos). Green is flexible, alive, and vibrant. Woven of light and shadow, I print from light to dark.

I have been exploring the native plants and wildlife of New Zealand, celebrating the unique qualities that make this such a special place to live.

Deane-Rose and Vicky have appropriated the concept of photographic ethnography as a means of challenging known Maori stereotypes. These images are aimed at encouraging a sense of individual and cultural self-expression and self-determined representation.

Vicky’s work is a blend of contemporary urban Maori experience and Maori tribal tradition.  She explores iconic New Zealand imagery in a new way whilst at the same time teasing out the impact ‘things maori’ are having in Aotearoa today.
Vicky grew up in Mangere, Auckland. Her father was Ngati Kahu from the Far North and her mother is of Irish/English decent and was born in Onehunga, Auckland. Apart from living in Australia for several years in her twenties, Vicky has lived in Auckland most of her life and is comfortable with describing herself as an urban Maori.
Her work in part comes from a culmination of life experiences and observations about being Maori and Pakeha living in Aotearoa/New Zealand. Her ideas are often influenced by pop culture, film, television, music and her ever growing interest in learning about her Maori heritage.

These self portraits are the first three of what will be an on-going body of work for Vicky. She sees this work as an opportunity to express her thoughts as an individual, at the same time comment on the environment in which she lives and functions.
 
Deane-Rose Ngatai

Deane-Rose is of Maori and Pakeha descent with tribal affiliations to Ngati Porou and Tainui. She has lived in Waitakere City since she was born.
Currently in her second year of completing a Bachelor of Design at Unitec, she majors in Photography and Media Arts. Deane-Rose is influenced greatly by her bicultural identity and whakapapa. Her inspiration is drawn from her culture, Maori traditions, arts, history and people.

This work addresses the term ‘Urban Maori’ and aims at challenging common perceptions of the ‘Traditional Maori’. The stamp design comments on the significant role that Maori culture and imagery plays in identifying New Zealand globally.  However the individuals propose a more personal understanding, they illustrate New Zealand as a multi-cultural society and question held perceptions of the stereotypical Maori.

Vicky has taken photographs of indicator and brake lights of a Subaru model car. Subaru is the Japanese name for the Matariki (Plaeides) constellation and has similar cultural significance to that of Maori.
The photos were then manipulated to form sphere shaped representations of the seven sisters that make up the Matariki constellation. This work is based on the idea of contemporary navigational guides and comments on the commercial and consumer driven world in which we are constantly navigating, but more importantly acts as a reminder of the culturally based global connections we have with others and the significance of it’s inclusion within our everyday existence as Maori and New Zealanders.
