An exhibition of kowhaiwhai styled reclaimed & recyled furniture by Borrowed Earth Design
Richard Butterworth – Ngati Porou/English
Adele Robinson – Fijian/English
Richard and Adele work from their purpose built studio based in Auckland and have been working with clay for a significant part of their lives. Clay will always be the foundation of Borrowed Earth’s artistic expression, however, they are currently enjoying exploring the use of their designs on fabric by creating a new range of reclaimed and upcycled furniture and interior design products that illustrate the beauty and uniqueness of Maori kowhaiwhai patterns. Richard and Adele have a vision to become a lifestyle brand known for handmade processes and sustainable choices that are NZ made.
We live in an inspiring landscape where nature is always close. Our backgrounds and where we live are entrenched in all of our designs and we are committed to producing handmade works that are made to last and proudly share our stories of Aotearoa with the rest of the world.
One metre of fabric used contains the equivalent of four plastic bottles and their cushion inners are also recycled PET fibre which comes from 100% post consumer water bottles. The fibre is non-allergenic and antibacterial. The wood used in their lamps is sourced from sustainable Rimu bushlands.
