KURA WELCOMES ROBIN HILL - KOROWAI WEAVER

“I love New Zealand, it’s in my heart and soul. My grandparents and great grandparents are buried here. I belong nowhere else, so as a craftworker I felt I needed to learn a craft that is only done in NZ.
To show respect to the Tangata Whenua I learnt from them the skill of Korowai weaving. I am very grateful to my tutors and fellow weavers at the Papakura Marae for their help and inspiration.”

KURA WELCOMES MICHAEL MATCHITT - CARVER

Te Whanau a Apanui
Carver
Michael currently resides in Te Awamutu but is originally from Te Kaha on the East Coast of the North Island. A descendant of Te Whanau a Apanui, Michael trained at the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Carving School – Te Puia in Rotorua from 1986 to 1988. Michael has developed and taught carving programmes at primary, secondary and currently tertiary level. He has also contributed to the carvings of seven Wharenui and restoration projects around New Zealand.
Michaels’s current works in glass focus on the way in which light interacts with sculpted works that have been previously carved in wood. In their original form, the woodcarvings reflect the previous life and origin of the wood used. When works evolve into a medium such as glass, the story of the original carving continues, as does the development of his work as a carver.

Te Akau Maori Art Space Officially Open at Kura Gallery with our 2nd Annual Carving Exhibition - Te Toi Whakairo Rua - The Art of Carving Two!

Kura Gallery - Te Akau Maori Art Space Opening - Te Toi Whakairo Rua 2nd Annual Carving Exhibition - 4th November 2010
We have officially opened Te Akau! Our new Art Space dedicated to the promotion and exhibition of Maori Art.
With a blessing by Kaumatua - Bobby Newson - Ngati Whatua. Te Akau was the name given to our space to signify our geographical location. Te Akau - meaning;
where the water meets the land and the land meets the water – the waterfront.
The opening was signalled by our 2nd Annual carving Exhibition, Te Toi Whakairo Rua - works by 22 carvers.
There was a fantastic turn-out of guests and supporters on the night including some of our exhibiting carvers from Auckland and carvers who travelled to Auckland from the Hokianga, Rotorua, Te Araroa, Tauranga, Whakatane and Wellington.
The opening of Te Akau is a significant move forward for Kura. The increasing interest by both local and international visitors to learn more about Maori culture through its visual arts has encouraged us to think positively about increasing awareness and further developing opportunities for our artists to express their unique and individual take on being Maori.
We look forward to introducing you to exciting new artists and outstanding works in the near future.
With aroha and passion - The Kura Team!

This is a significant step forward for Kura and from our perspective a great step forward for Auckland.
Increasing our space has been a necessary step for us to take, as we are very positive about the future growth of Maori art creativity. We have every indication from both local and international visitors that there is a growing interest in acquiring quality, authentic Maori artworks.
