Roimata, the teardrop, is important in Maori design. The first designs are said to come from the tears shed during the separation of Ranginui (Sky father) and Papatuanuku (Earthmother). In Maori Mythology, Rangi & Papatuanuku are lovingly embraced. Their children lived in darkness between them. We see drops of rain as tears from Ranginui as he cried for his wife Papatuanuku, who was torn away from him; after their children pushed them apart in an effort to see light and live outside the darkness.
