Translation
Entries and Exists in Maori beliefs are expressed in a variety of ways. The term Kuwaha simply refers to a doorway. Translate below:

Ku – To squeeze into a space, narrow, (synonym- a low inaudible sound)

Waha – Mouth, receptacle,

Wa – Time, space, limitless

Ha – Breath, low inaudible sound.

Kuwaha literally means ‘Narrow Receptacle’.

Structure
The Kuwaha that is carved here is influenced by the old designed and constructed methods. The lowered height references the ‘Prone position’, the narrowing allows only single file and the architectural construction is completed without the use of steel bindings. The paint used is all acrylic paint. The feathers invite the Atua (Gods) to take residence in the structure.

Symbolism
Entries and Exists represent transitional points for Maori/ Humankind.
The main central figure represents ‘Mankind’ that is covered or influenced by political, cultural, spiritual or environmental values. The ‘eel’ like figures represents the fore mentioned characteristics.
The influential hope is that by moving through this gate, one will leave potentially overpowering hazards behind. This will reposition the person to refocus goals and priorities.
