Indicating Navigators, 2009
Vicky has taken photographs of indicator and brake lights of a Subaru model car. Subaru is the Japanese name for the Matariki (Plaeides) constellation and has similar cultural significance to that of Maori.
The photos were then manipulated to form sphere shaped representations of the seven sisters that make up the Matariki constellation. This work is based on the idea of contemporary navigational guides and comments on the commercial and consumer driven world in which we are constantly navigating, but more importantly acts as a reminder of the culturally based global connections we have with others and the significance of it’s inclusion within our everyday existence as Maori and New Zealanders.
