Artist Profile: Omni Caeon

Carver

In 1998 I saw an exhibition of stone carvings by Donn Salt at the Southland Museum and Art Gallery. I was deeply moved by the beauty and emanating soul of his works. The inspiration gained from this exquisite collection of works remained with me and one year later, 1989, the artist consented to instruct me in basic stone working skills. From carving simple jade ear drops and pendants my skill level grew and expanded. I found growth in expression reflects an inner journey, which is a continual stepping out of my comfort zone and exposure of who I am… or am not.

The growing passion and love for jade has influenced my attitude and way of life. In 1991 I was able to harness the rewards of this passion establishing my own business working as a professional jade carver. To this day I think jade is a beautiful reflection of this country – New Zealand. This is exciting, rewarding, and agonising all at the same time. A life experience I would not want to miss for anything. I use only jade mined in New Zealand and my work can be seen at Auckland Institute and Museum, Te Papa Tongarewa Wellington, and the Opal Centre in Queenstown.
