Shellfish were an important part of the M?ori diet, which included at least 40 different species. Pipi, a shallow sand-burrowing shellfish found in estuaries and sandy river mouths, was a favourite. Shells were used by M?ori in a variety of ways: Fish hooks, and the iridescent inner shell of p?ua was used for fishing lures, scrapers and cutters.
