Kura Gallery – Te Akau Maori Art Space Opening – Te Toi Whakairo Rua 2nd Annual Carving Exhibition – 4th November 2010

We have officially opened Te Akau! Our new Art Space dedicated to the promotion and exhibition of Maori Art.
With a blessing by Kaumatua – Bobby Newson – Ngati Whatua. Te Akau was the name given to our space to signify our geographical location. Te Akau – meaning;
where the water meets the land and the land meets the water – the waterfront.
The opening was signalled by our 2nd Annual carving Exhibition, Te Toi Whakairo Rua – works by 22 carvers.
There was a fantastic turn-out of guests and supporters on the night including some of our exhibiting carvers from Auckland and carvers who travelled to Auckland from the Hokianga, Rotorua, Te Araroa, Tauranga, Whakatane and Wellington.
The opening of Te Akau is a significant move forward for Kura. The increasing interest by both local and international visitors to learn more about Maori culture through its visual arts has encouraged us to think positively about increasing awareness and further developing opportunities for our artists to express their unique and individual take on being Maori.
We look forward to introducing you to exciting new artists and outstanding works in the near future.
