Toki/Adze – pounamu/greenstone toki have a spiritual meaning associated with strength (mana).
Before toki became ornamental they were an everyday tool (adze) used in cutting and digging. They were also lashed into expertly carved wooden shafts and wielded by powerful Maori chiefs during religious ceremonies.
