Clarence Collier

Stone Sculptor & Painter
Ngati Porou, Mahaki (East Coast)

Clarence Collier is a self taught artist working primarily in Greenstone and Oamaru Stone. He grew up in Greymouth on the West Coast of the South Island. It is there where much of his inspiration has come from, the beauty of the region and his respect for the environment.

Clarence enjoys the challenge of three dimensional work. He believes each stone has a korero which he interprets then transforms into an art piece. When creating each sculpture he works continuously without stopping to keep the mauri (lifeforce) flowing.

“Ki te Maori he mauri kai roto I nga mea katoa I nga tangata, I nga whare, I nga rakau, I nga taonga whakairo”.

Clarence now lives and works in Wellington as a full-time artist.

As well as works available in the Wellington and Auckland stores, see Kura’s online shop (‘Shop’ tab above) for more pieces by Clarence Collier.
