Nga Puhi, Ngati Wai
Hemi grew up with his grandmother in Whangaruru, Northland.
Although not particularly interested in art at high school he has memories of doodling as a child which he admits he has never stopped doing. He currently works regularly as a set designer for film productions.
Hemi is a self-taught artist and describes his working style as an organic process in that it is not planned. It’s more like channeling energy from the materials that he uses. One unusual material that he likes to use in his paintings is dirt/earth. He prefers his artwork to have a connection with its material history by using recycled timbers and dirt as a way of connecting past histories with future stories.
